Fantastic experience! From Pete visiting to make design suggestions and measuring up, to Wade doing an excellent job on the garden gate installation. Very good customer service resulting in us having a newly installed hardwood gate at a very reasonable price that looks great - couldn't have asked for more!

Great service from Pete and the team, from initial contact to final installation. We couldn’t be happier with the gates, and the bespoke hand made canopy above the front door! First class. Highly recommend.

The gates have been very well made and the accessories match really well. The installation team (Wade and Ayden) were first class and couldn't have been more polite or helpful. Their fitting experience showed in the way that they hung the gates. They always checked with us before making fitting and accessory decisions. We are really pleased with the finished installation.

It's a rare thing these days to have people fit something and have them ask intelligent questions about how I would like it done, thanks for the exceptional service supplying and fitting my new gate and door

I recently needed to replace some old gates which had deteriorated after some 15years of use. In addition there were problems with the gate automation. I contacted the Wooden Gate Company and after speaking to Mr Peter Caulkin he arranged to visit my home to discuss the problems.(Fortunately, he only lived a few miles from me). He carried out a thorough survey and arranged new gates and new automation for me. The quality of the gates, the finish and the installation was superb. I could not have expected a more professional job. It was a truly 5 star service. I would highly recommend this Company to all. Thank you Peter and your team.

Painted gates using RAL colours for wooden gates

Painted gates

Painted gates can really make a statement and add wow factor to your property. We recommend using a hardwood timber as painting softwood will not last anywhere near as long as a hardwood.  Hardwood tends to be knot free. Softwood has many more knots which even when treated prior to painting can bleed through over time. A painted wooden gate should be inspected regularly to make sure there are no splits/cracks in the paint to allow moisture to seep in over time as this will damage the gate from the inside out. This is another reason we would strongly recommend using hardwood. Softwood is more prone to splitting. Also if a hardwood is used as even if moisture does manage to enter, the hardwood will be much more durable.

We can offer any colour and we recommend choosing from our   ral-colour-chart or we have also had really good results using Farrow and Ball. If you have a colour not available on this chart please just ask and we’ll be happy to help. Using a good quality paint will prevent splits and cracks so we would not recommend using any cheaper products.

How to get a painted gate

You can find a guide and more information of how to paint your wooden gates by clicking here. However we appreciate that not everyone has the time or the space to paint their new wooden gates. Therefore we can offer the application service from as little as £60 depending on the size and style of gate.

Our online calculator can give you an instant quote for the gates and also the painting service or if you would rather discuss, please get in touch

If you are looking for a more traditional natural look for your wooden gates we recommend using our superior gate oil. Please see examples of these in our main gallery.

Gate Care

Gate Care

Your gates will cost you a lot of money, and we would like you to keep them in good condition. We don’t like to see poor gates anymore than you want them outside your home.

Here are some useful tips , and facts about timber gates. Timber is always moving, what we need to do is keep this movement to a minimum. Nothing will stop a gate moving, not metal banding, metal strutts, or making them out of some expensive hardwood.

So what do we do?

Firstly, we must try and keep as much moisture out of the gate, but at the same time stop it drying out in very hot weather.

Stage 1 Stain and oil method.

Stain your gate the colour of your choice. Do this by brush and keep inline with the grain. If you come across sanding marks, a quick rub over with sandpaper following the grain should remove these. You will use about a litre of stain on a double gate. If you have found that the colour is too dark this can sometimes be lightened by rubbing over with white spirit, or cellulose thinners.

BEWARE USING THESE PRODUCTS AVOID INHALATION AND COINTACT WITH ANY SOURCE OF HEAT

Stage 2

Apply the oil mixture liberally, let it soak into the gate, put a piece of paper below the gates to catch the drips.

DO NOT USE THE OIL IF THE GATE HAS GOT SOAKING WET WAIT FOR IT TO DRY OUT AGAIN.

Stage 3

Apply a second and third coat of oil or as many as the gate needs to soak up and absorb  the oil. The more trouble you take now the less problems in the future.

Stage 4

Keep an eye on the gates, you should have made them waterproof with the oil, this is made with Tung nut oil, the finest natural oil there is, and has been used for thoasands of years to waterproof timber. If the gates look dry give them another coat, this will only take 10-15 minutes.

Stage 5

Give the gate further coats as required but we recommend  at least twice per year

DO NOT USE THE OIL IN A CONFINED SPACE, AND BEWARE IT IS INFLAMMABLE BEWARE OF OIL SOAKED CLOTHS AND BRUSHES, DO NOT LEAVE THEM NEAR ANY SORCES OF HEAT AND DO NOT SCREW IN A BALL BUT LAY OUT FLAT UNTIL DRY.

What to avoid

Try to avoid microporous finishes, they can cause warping and twisting of the timbers. Avoid the use of fencing paints and other waterbased finishes, they generally do not work on smooth planed timber. Oil based finishes like gloss paint are fine, make sure the bottom of the gate is sealed, and inspect every year, as small cracks will appear and allow the ingress of water.
