Metal framed gates offer a durable alternative to fully framed timber gates, as they are constructed from galvanized steel. Additionally, the option for powder coating provides an exceptionally resilient finish. The metal frame can be clad with softwood, hardwood, or composite materials to achieve various aesthetic preferences.

Working together with a local Shropshire based engineering company CRF we offer metal framed gates in all shapes and sizes. These gates can be fitted between exiting brickwork or we can install metal posts. The posts would match the metal frame of the gate. Wooden Gate Timber Products ltd can also install these gates. We offer manual or we can also add automation systems similarly to our wooden gates. Metal framed gates can be heavy so we would recommend automation however this can very much depend on the width and height of the gate.

Oak Gates

Oak Gates have great strength and hardness. Extremely attractive in its natural state, with a clear treatment. Naturally very resistant to insect and fungal attacks owing to its high tannin content.

Very attractive grain markings and looks great with our superior gate oil giving natural finish although it can be stained and painted. Not only matches traditional ‘old’ look but also great with modern houses.

Treated correctly, oak can certainly last up to and above of 40 years!! Despite this, OAK is very prone to splitting and can have large knots that may need attention throughout its life. For example it should be used only if wanting a rustic look. If this is not acceptable then we would recommend an IDIGBO, IROKO or ACCOYA. These timbers are less prone to splitting/twisting/knots etc.

Care must be taken when using with untreated iron and steel as it will leave blue markings which will detract from the beauty of the wood, the markings will not sand out so be careful! Stainless Steel is the best option to choose undoubtedly.

Gates made from oak are particularly heavy so it is great for garden gates and side gates. They can also be used for driveway or estate gates but when using this material, strong pillars or wooden posts must be used.

Posts to Match?

In addition we can supply Air dried Oak Posts to match you wooden Oak Gates, Note there can be large splits in posts made from oak which can be off putting. As a result we can also supply posts made from IROKO and Metal.

Since other companies are selling green oak gates and posts as these will warp and twist when they dry out. Therefore please be careful when comparing.

We use a mix of the highest quality (prime/A grade) and Joinery Grade Kiln dried European Oak. Most of which we source from Border Hardwood, a local timber supplier. Additionally sometimes we laminate the timber consequently reducing the risk of warp/twisting even further.

Weight is around 750kg per m3, but all oak gates will vary!

Types of Wooden Gate

Iroko Gates

Iroko gates are certainly one of, if not the best choice for your property. Iroko has very strong properties such as being very strong and very durable. Moreover is also has very little movement, splits or shakes as a result of Iroko’s oily texture. Naturally very resistant to insect and fungal attacks owing to its high tannin content. Iroko Gates can also be painted but we would recommend using our superior gate oil for the most attractive long lasting finish.

It is frequently referred to as African Teak due to its durability and appearance. African teak ie Iroko has a wide distribution in tropical Africa, found from Sierra Leone in the west to Tanzania in the east. Iroko confined to West Africa where it occurs from Senegal to Ghana. The wood colour is initially yellowish-brown, darkening to a much richer, darker reddish brown over time. Most of our Iroko comes from Hardwood Sales based in Liverpool.

Typically the timber weighs around 660kg/m3.

Siberian Larch wooden gates

Siberian Larch used for wooden gates

As the name suggests the timber for our Siberian Larch wooden gates is an imported softwood from Siberia, which is felled from sustainable forests and has some amazing qualities.

Siberian Larch wooden gates are both durable and with care long lasting

VERY DURABLE – Its one of the toughest and hardest softwoods in the world, and is ideal where physical damage may occur ie knocks and scrapes on wooden gates
ROT AND FUNGUS RESISTANT – naturally resistant to rot and fungus attack making impregnation ie tanalising unneccesary
DURABILITY – Studies concerning the life of the timber have shown :-
- 10-15 years in contact with the ground
- 50-100 years unproteted outdoors
- 100-150 years protected outdoors
SUSTAINABILITY – This is a sustainable timber source, with more timber growing than is felled annually
DIMENSIONALLY STABLE – Very little expansion when exposed to heat or moisture. Very important with gates, remains stable and straight
STRENGTH, VISUAL APPEARANCE, FAIRLY LOW MAINTENANCE, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY, COMPETITIVE PRICE

Types of Wooden Gate

IDIGBO Gates

IDIGBO

Idigbo gates are definitely our favourite here at Wooden Gate Timber Products .

It offers a strong and very attractive finish. Similar in appearance to European Oak but has much less knots, splits and twists. Not to mention the price is much more manageable.

The colour of the timber does vary a little, mainly light in colour, it can sometime have darker tones but this does tend to even out once weathered.

Fairly lightweight around 520kgs per cubic metre.

Idigbo takes a stain well. It can be painted however as Idigbo is a fairly oily hardwood we would recommend using an aluminium based prime/undercoat to lock the tannins in the timber.

Idigbo makes great driveway gates and garden gates for nearly any application.

Cedar Gates

Cedar Gates are renowned for their high decay-resistance. Very light weight and stable, great for wooden gates, especially larger estate gates!

Cubic weight is 370kg.

The lack of pitch or resinous extractives contributes to its good finishing properties which means it can take a variety of coatings, paints and stains exceptionally well.

Western red Cedar can be manufactured into side gates, garden gates and of course driveway gates. These cedar gates are particularly stable and subject to very little movement ie warp or twisting which is very useful when producing large wooden gates.

Cedar gates like other timbers will turn grey over time with a clear treatment such as Tung oil, but their durability will not be reduced. These cedar gates are particularly useful in adverse weather conditions such as coastal or exposed sites or where the gates are particularly large.

TIP: when fitting it can be Advantageous to bolt all the way through the gate rather than using screws..

Types of Wooden Gate

Softwood Gates – Redwood

Softwood is often referred to as Redwood or Pine. It is classed as a moderately hard wearing timber suitable for outside use great for Softwood gates, but its not red !

Redwood weight is 510kg per m3

All softwood gates will need looking after at least twice per year for the whole of its life so will need close attention during its first year.The more treatment in the first year the better however Redwood makes an excellent softwood gate, you will just have to look after it to get the keep it looking fresh and to get the best lifespan.

Softwood Gates take a stain or paint well but does need attention during its life. This timber left outside if only for 1 day and allowed to get very wet, could result in the timbers turning black,the boards expanding in their frame to such an extent that they can buckle off the main frame. At Wooden Gate Timber Products we offer staining service prior to the gate being delivered or fitted to reduce the risk of this.

The effect of water damage in Redwood can be greatly reduced by the application of the stabilizing solution which stops moisture entering the timber too fast, or loosing it when the weather turns very hot. This coating will last for up to 6 months, where the gate will need to be protected with a good few coats of oil, or a similar coating. DO NOT USE MICRO POROUS FINISHES .
